The Gallery of Modern Art (Galleria d'Arte Moderna)

The Gallery of Modern Art in Rome Rome's Gallery of Modern Art houses works by Van Gogh, Klimt, Goya and others.

Modern Art may not be your first thought when you arrive in Rome, but the impressive Galleria d'Arte Moderna is definitely worth a visit. This collection of neo-classical and modernist art was first opened in 1881 and has been housed in the current building, designed by the architect Cesare Bazzani, since 1915. It has since become the largest collection of modern art in Italy housing over 5,000 paintings and sculptures.

Things to See

The collection includes works from many of the major artistic figures of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries including Guttoso, Morandi, Goya, Blake, Renoir, Rossetti, Van Gogh, Degas, Monet, Cezanne, Mirò, Paul Klee, Kandinsky and Klimt. There are also several works of contemporary art on display. On a sunny day it is nice to venture out into the courtyard of the building where several other works are displayed, including a beautiful sculpture by Canova.

The gallery can be reached either by tram number 3 or 19, which both stop along the Via delle Belle Arti, or you can take the metro to Flaminio on linea A, and walk straight through the beautiful Villa Borghese, veering off to the left and arriving in front of the gallery.
