Most Italian banks won't let you open an account unless you have residential status in Italy. However, this can vary, and there are conflicting reports of what banks can and can't do for you. It may depend on the bank, the branch, the assistant, the weather...

Many Italian banks have branches abroad, and some people have been able to open their Italian bank accounts (at least provisionally) by visiting the branch in their native country. If you live near a major city in your home country, this can be worth looking into.

Finally, if you do have trouble opening a bank account, you may be able to open a post office account instead. These have fewer features than full bank accounts, but still offer basic functionality.
