The Rome Metro
The Rome metro currently has two active lines, Linea A and Linea B, which intersect at Termini Station. Linea C is also in development, and has been for some time. The first stations are currently scheduled to open in 2012.
See the Rome Metro Map for more information about the routes of the two lines.
Linea A is the primary tourist line, as it stops at the Vatican. As with all locations where crowds of tourists gather in Rome, watch out for pickpockets on the metro.
Opening Times
The Metro runs from 5.30am to 11.30pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 1.30am on Friday and Saturday.
Tickets (Biglietti)
Tickets for the metro cost exactly one euro, and can be bought from tobacconists, or the machines in each station. These tickets, known as "biglietti", are good for only one metro ride, but also seventy-five minutes of unlimited travel on Rome's busses and trams.
To use the machines, first select the number of tickets you want, then put the money in the slot. Bear in mind that they don't give more than four euros in change, so make sure you have some coins or a €5 note with you—alternatively, you could always buy some extra tickets (those 75 minutes don't start counting down until you first use the ticket).
Twenty-four hour tickets (with unlimited metro travel) are available for four euros, as are weekly and monthly passes.
