Primo Maggio, Rome's first great festival of the spring, takes place — as its name suggests — on . The festival is centred around a concert that takes place in front of San Giovanni in Laterano, featuring a number of well known Italian pop and rock bands, as well as the occasional international guest.
Previous acts have included Italian bands Subsonica and Negramaro, and international acts like Skunk Anansie and Juliette Lewis. (Perhaps the organisers of Primo Maggio are fans of the 1995 science-fiction film Strange Days, which also featured both Skunk Anansie and Juliette Lewis).
As well as the music, which goes on all day, there are numerous stalls selling food as well as T-shirts and other odds and ends.
The line-up for Primo Maggio tends to be announced only a few days before the event but the date, naturally enough, will be the first of May. For last-minute updates, keep an eye on their website, primomaggio.net and Facebook page.
