Isola Tiberina: the island on the Tiber that hosts L'Isola Del CinemaBetween June and September every year, Isola Tiberina - the island in the middle of the Tiber river - is host to a cinema festival known as L'Isola Del Cinema. Since 2006, this has consisted of two cinemas - one open-air cinema (Sala Visconti) on the island itself, and the CineLab in Trastevere.
Films shown in recent years have included Hitchcock and Kubrick retrospectives and films by Robert Altman and Wong Kar Wai, along with many other Italian and foreign films.
As well as the films, the island and the banks of the river are lines with bars, cafès and a wide variety of stalls selling everything from environmentally friendly knicknacks to DVDs. It's the perfect place to spend a summer evening, having a drink with friends and browsing the stalls.
L'Isola Del Cinema in 2009
2009 sees the fifteenth edition of L'Isola Del Cinema, which will run from late June to early September.
